OGUK Offshore Medicals

Offshore workers need to pass an Offshore Medical Examination if they wish to work offshore.

An OGUK Offshore Medical consists of the following:

  • Completion of Past Medical History Questionnaire

  • Urinalysis – routine & microscopic urine tests

  • Near, Distance and Colour Vision 

  • Clinical Examinations of all body systems including BMI calculation

  • Spirometry - Pulmonary Function Tests

  • Audiogram - hearing assessment 

  • ECG

  • Consultation with an OGUK doctor

  • Laboratory tests – Haematology, Biochemistry, Serology

  • Drugs of Abuse & Alcohol tests


ERT Medicals

Members of Emergency Response Teams (ERT) require a higher level of fitness which is assessed by an ERT Medical Examination.

The ERT Medical is similar to the OGUK Offshore Medical with the addition of an ERT Health Review, Spirometry and a Fitness Test - TMT Stress test / Chester Step.

An annual review including Spirometry and a Fitness Test - TMT Stress test / Chester Step is required.

What does the OGUK medical examination involve? Completion and discussion of the OGUK medical health questionnaire. • Physical examination including height, weight and BMI. • Urine testing (to assess how well your kidneys/ body is working). • Vision testing (near, distance and colour). • Audiometry testing (hearing test). • Some Companies require an additional drug and/ or alcohol screen. Please make sure you understand what your Company requires!.
How long will the OGUK medical take? The OGUK medical will last around 30 to 60 minutes.
Can a ‘Fit to Train’ assessment be done at the same time as my OGUK Medical ? Yes. For BOSIET and FOET personnel, a valid OGUK medical certificate and an OGUK ‘Fit to Train’ certificate is required to be issued by an OGUK examining doctor. Please let us know at the time of booking the OGUK medical.
How long is the OGUK certificate valid for? The OGUK certificate is valid for two years. For medical reasons, it is possible the certificate may be issued for a shorter period of time.
What do I need to know bring to my Offshore Medical appointment? Certified photo ID such passport or driving license • To bring your glasses (and spares) / contact lenses if worn; • To avoid exposure to loud noise for 16 hrs prior to your appointment • To bring any medication, doctor/ hospital letters and relevant investigations results
Do I get my OGUK certificate on the day of my appointment? Yes, as long as the doctor can deem you fit, we will provide you with the certificate at the end of your appointment to take away with you.
Which countries accept an Oil and Gas UK (OGUK) medical certificate? The Netherlands and Norway are covered by a normal OGUK medical certificate. If your certificate is restricted, this will not be accepted outside of the UK sector. Generally, the OGUK medical is accepted as a worldwide indicator of health and fitness of anyone working in the Oil and Gas industry.
